OKC Scissortail Park

Its here!  Its finally here!

OKC now has its own great little park downtown!  I say little, but its anything but.  With over 36 acres to explore, there is something for everyone.  Even your 4 legged furbabies!

The Upper Park which opened on September 27, 2019; features a performance stage on the Great Lawn, a 3 acre lake with pedal boats, boathouse, dog park, pavillions, water fountain play area, and a childrens playground.  There is even a seasonal outdoor roller rink!

The park is set to be a total of 70 acres, once the Lower Park is completed in the future, featuring sports fields, a community garden with a demonstration kitchen, and an outdoor performance area.

The Upper and Lower Parks are connected by the Scissortail Bridge that crosses I40.

Their Grand Opening was on Friday with a kick off concert by Kings Of Leon.  According to news sources, they had a record setting number in attendance.  28k people went out to the park to celebrate the opening with a kick off concert and park dedication.

We went out on Sunday, the 3rd day of Opening Weekend to check out the newest edition to OKC.  We were pretty impressed with what we saw.

I will say that we were extremely worried about the crowds but with so much area to move around, we didnt have any problems with being stuck in long lines or being bumped into.  It was less stressful than the State Fair!

We got to the park around 1pm.  We immediately went to the food trucks that were there and grabbed a bite to eat.

I had been so excied all week to eat at MOB {Marco’s Onion Burger}; and was rather disappointed to discover that they werent still there.

So we decided to try out Yum Pig and boy were we impressed.  Bug and I got their loaded fries with pulled pork and my darling husband got their Original fry bread creation.   It was so yummy I didnt even remember to take pictures of it!  If you haven’t tried them out, I definitely suggest you do!

After eating we decided to check out the Kid Zone.  This place looked amazing.  Not your typical jungle gym and swings here.

Nope.  This place has wooden logs, a giant spider, a huge rope sphere, 2 sand pits-1 with tools and 1 without, a ropes course, metal drums, a bridge jungle gym, a spinning frisbee ride, and of course an epic slide.

Even with all the kids running around that day, the kids were all able to play and try out the equipment.  They didnt feel too crowded or pushed out, which was really nice.

We took Bug’s spoiled pup to the dog park so she could give us her two cents, and Id say it was a hit.  By the time we left, she was demanding to be carried because she was just worn plum out.

The dog park is on the small side, and I imagine if their were lots of dogs in there at one time it would be chaotic, but there were only a couple of other dogs and that was just on the one side.

The dog park offers a small dog side and a large dog side, each with seperate two gated entrances.  At the gates, there is also a water fountain that you can grab a drink for you and a small doggie sized fountain for your pup!

Unfortunately when we went, it was extremely hot and humid.  It had started off cloudy and breezy….I still dont know what happened there!

I dont do well in the heat and neither does my daughter.  So we were only there for a couple of hours.  However, we really enjoyed it and cant wait to go back this fall.   I love being outdoors during the crisp weather and this park will be the perfect place to spend some time walking and playing during the day.

The park has a lot of exciting events planned in October.  Food trucks planned every Sat-Sun, boot camps, Farmers Markets, Childrens Story and Crafts, concerts, yoga, and sporting events.  Get a full list of all events and their details on the website.  https://scissortailpark.org/calendar/
